Vestibular Sense in Autism

June 9, 2023

As a parent you cherish every moment with your children, from their first steps to their joyful giggles. But for parents of children with autism, these moments can sometimes be overshadowed by the challenges of sensory sensitivities.

Amongst common sensory issues in toddlers with ASD include challenges with the vestibular sense, which is responsible for balance and spatial orientation.

The vestibular sense, our inner balance system, is located in the inner ear. It helps us maintain posture, coordinate movements, and stabilize our gaze. This sense provides vital feedback to our brain about our body’s position and movements in space. Needless to say, it is very important!

Children with autism often experience sensory issues, including sensory sensitivity, which can affect their vestibular sense. Troubles with vestibular sense can manifest as difficulty with balance, coordination, spatial awareness, and an aversion to certain movements or sensations.

Sensory issues in kids with ASD, related to the vestibular sense, may struggle with everyday activities that involve movement, such as riding a bike, climbing stairs, or even swinging on a swing. These challenges can hinder overall development and well-being.

But struggles with the vestibular sense, or sensory issues in toddlers overall can be addressed successfully through ABA therapy interventions.

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy, a highly effective intervention for children with autism, can significantly support children in overcoming vestibular challenges and sensory sensitivity. ABA therapists work closely with children to gradually introduce and desensitize them to various vestibular experiences, helping them build tolerance and improve their ability to engage in age-appropriate activities.

ABA therapists may also address sensory issues in kids by integrating sensory-rich activities that provide vestibular stimulation within their therapy sessions. These activities help improve vestibular sensory issues in toddlers by enhancing processing and promoting  sensory integration.
