What is a BCBA & What Do They Do?

April 13, 2023

Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) need an army of support around them in order to thrive socially, academically, and personally. While being a loving parent is key to your child’s development, children with ASD may also require the focused care and support of professionals to step into their full potential.

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy is widely regarded as the most effective form of Autism therapy available.

Applying certain psychological principles of learning theory, ABA therapy, which can come in the form of in-home therapy, in-center therapy, and school-based therapy, is used to successfully modify behaviors.

But not just anyone can facilitate ABA therapy! ABA therapy results are best when you employ the help of a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, or BCBA.

A BCBA professional is someone who has a Master’s degree in behavior analysis, psychology, or education from the Behavior Analyst Certification Board. This is the most basic requirement of becoming a BCBA.

But what does a BCBA actually do?

BCBAs are responsible for assessing their client’s needs and designing a custom program that applies certain therapeutic interventions to bring about meaningful change in a autistic child’s life. Using rewards and punishment systems to mold behavior, BCBAs help individuals learn how to regulate their reactions to their surrounding environments. Some of the daily activities of a BCBA include:

  • Conducting comprehensive assessments of a child’s needs and crafting ABA therapy plans to bring about meaningful change.
  • Spending one-on-one time with children with ASD to work toward certain ABA therapy goals.
  • Supporting and guiding other therapists and parents of children with ASD to fortify ABA therapy plans.
  • Adjusting and modifying ABA therapy strategies to better fit a patient’s needs.

At Step Forward ABA our BCBAs facilitate ABA therapy in the environment that best suits your child’s specific needs. Offering in-home therapy, school-based therapy, and more, we curate an intentional ABA therapy plan that is not only rooted in the scientific principles of Applied Behavior Analysis, but tailored to fit your child’s specific requirements and objectives.
